Bianca Andreescu Wins U16 Orange Bowl Title!!

Bianca Andreescu from Vaughan won the U16 Girls singles champion at the 2014 Metropolia Orange Bowl tournament in Florida. The 8th seeded Andreescu won a tight final 7-5, 6-3 against American Dominique Schaefer. This impressive win follows Andreescu’s victory earlier this year at the prestigious Les Petit as tournament in France, establishing her as one to watch! Congratulations Bianca! U12 and U14 Orange Bowl matches continue this week. Special mention also to Ontarian Christian Lakoseljac & Basil Khuma from India captured the U16 Metropolia Orange Bowl Doubles Championship this week in Florida. OTA Future Stars Year End Finale

 The Ontario Racquet Club hosted the Future Stars Tour Year End Finale Saturday December 13th. The top 5 competitors of each category and guests we’re invited to the club for on court activities and a lunch/awards ceremony. During the lunch each player was given special recognition and awarded their prize for their year end result. Special recognition goes out to Gary Muller and the ORC coaching who were on court showing their support.

There has been a new policy added to the “Rules of the Court for 2015”. Players who withdraw late or fail to complete all required events in a tournament will receive penalty points which can lead to a player being suspended. Click here for more details.

Orange Bowl Kicks Off in Florida Saturday

The prestigious International Orange Bowl Tennis Tournament in Florida kicks off with U16 and U18 qualifying matches Saturday December 7th. Main draw commences Monday with the finals scheduled for Sunday December 14th. The U12 and U14 divisions start Decembr 14th. Over 20 players from Ontario are competing this year. For a complete list of players and daily results, click here. Past winners from Ontario include, Sharon Fichman, Katerina Pallivets, Gabriela Dabrowski, Erin Routliffe, Gloria Liang Carol Zhao, (doubles) and Alejandro Tabilo, (doubles).

2014 Team Ontario Fall Circuit

This year’s Team Ontario Fall Circuit has concluded with some dominating performances put forth by some of the provinces best player’s. Please see below this year’s standings and results.

Boys Under 16 

The BU16 circuit was a back in forth affair with player’s Nick Lagaev, Alexis Alvarez, and Paul Olteanu putting forth valiant efforts. However, it was dark horse Jonathan Sorbo who peaked when it mattered most. On the final stop of the circuit Sorbo knew he had to win to clinch the circuit championship. His focus and determination paid off as he steam rolled through the tournament not dropping a set. Congratulation to Jon on a job well done. 

Girls Under 16

With her brother rising the ranks of the ITF, Alexandra Tutecky made a statement that for family supremacy with a dominating performance in the GU16 circuit. Tutecky won two of three tournaments, losing the other in the final. She’ll definitely be one to watch during the 2015 Indoor Provincials and Nationals. 

Boys Under 18

Super athlete Malik Bhatnagar cruised to the circuit championship winning all three events in style winning all of his matches in straight sets. His relocation to ACE Burlington looks to be paying off as he’s truly one of the power houses in the BU18 division. His presence on the 2015 Team Ontario squad will be a blessing for the province as Bhatnagar looks to do some damage at the U18 Indoor Nationals. 

Girls Under 18

One of the closer races to date, the GU18 circuit showcased three separate tournament champions (Natasha Irani, Olivia Peisachovitz, and Viktoryia Tabunshchyk ). However, it was the consistent play of up and comer Nifemi Akinbiyi, who won the circuit championship. Her appearance in the finals, semis, and quarters clinched the title and shows that she’s one to watch during the 2015 indoor season. All 2014 Circuit Champions will be granted a spot on Team Ontario for the 2015 Indoor Nationals. Congratulation to all of our champions and thank you to all of our participants who helped make this year’s circuit a success.

The 2014 Wilson/Mayfair Clubs 2015 Senior ITF Tour kicks off in January. The first event is January 1 to 4; the second event is February 13 to 16. Raonic Race For Kids a Huge Success!

The Raonic Race for Kids fundraiser was held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on November 25. Hosted by Milos Raonic and Tennis Canada the event raised $130,000 for The Milos Raonic Foundation and Tennis Canada’s "Let's Make Tennis Matter for Kids" campaign. The event saw 16 teams vie for the Raonic Cup by participating in a series of fun, interactive, circuit-style challenges alongside their celebrity honorary captains. The captains were Milos, Frank Dancevic Patrick Chan, George Stroumboulopoulos, Dwayne De Rosario, Carson Arthur, Adriano Belli, Michael Boguski, Rob Faulds, Karl Hale, Curt Harnett, Marnie McBean, Danielle Michaud, Kelly Murumets, Martin Reader,Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir. The Master of Ceremonies for the event was TSN’s Cabbie Richards. A special shout out to the OTA Future Stars team and their captain ATP and Canadian Davis Cup tennis star Frank Dancevic. Some of Canada's Top Juniors Playing ITF Tournament in Mexico

Play got underway this week at a GA (top tier) ITF Junior tournament this week in Mexico. Many of the top Canadian junior players began competition on Monday, including a strong contingent from Ontario. The finals are scheduled for Sunday. Of note was a tremendous win for Markham Ontario's Jack Mingjie Lin, (pictured above) who defeated the 2nd seeded American Taylor Fritz, (world rank 14), in a three set thriller. Raonic Race for Kids Fundraiser November 25 at Metro Convention Centre

The Raonic Race for Kids a fun, interactive, circuit-style set of challenges completed by 20 teams all in the name of good, friendly competitiveness and – most importantly – fundraising. Teams will be made up of 6-8 racers including a celebrity or athlete as their Honorary Team Captain. Each team is required to raise a minimum of $5000 and the Top Fund-Racing Team win the right to choose their honorary celebrity team captain. Raonic Named Canadian of the Year by Canadian Club

After another tremendous season on the ATP World Tour, Milos Raonic is sure to start amassing several year-end awards. The first honour of that nature has come from the Canadian Club of Toronto which is presenting Raonic with their 2014 Canadian of the Year award.

This recognition has been in existence since 1992 and is presented to distinguished Canadians whose efforts and example have improved the lives of others and benefited us as a nation. The award will be accepted by Raonic at a breakfast in his honour on November 26 at the Sheraton Hotel in Toronto.

After a season where he won his sixth, and largest, title to date in Washington, reached the Grand Slam quarter-finals (French Open) and semifinals (Wimbledon) for the first time and finished the year inside the Top 8, Raonic displayed consistency and continued improvement over his previous season, solidifying himself as a legitimate Top 10 player on the ATP World Tour.

Very Important: New Policy for Competitors beginning Jan 1st 2015

There has been a new policy added to the “Rules of the Court for 2015”. Players who withdraw late or fail to complete all required events in a tournament will receive penalty points which can lead to a player being suspended. Click here for more details.
